SAWDUST MINING anyone?

In one of the corners of BAXTER STATE PARK is a 'hill' of sawdust, several
football fields in area; between 30-50 ft deep.  

It's been here as a reminder of a sawmill which once stood on the shore of a
lake over 100 years ago; it's also an ecological curiosity, since absolutely
nothing will grow on it. Hikers come to play on it, since it has a
mattress-like feel.

I'd rather leave it as a reminder of how long the Maine woods have been
'mined' and how durable wood can really be.
