Toby, Daniel, List

I am working towards the end goal of using a plasma stage as a gas quality
improver.

I have already conducted some "bean-can" experiments in creating plasma in a
can of ordinary wood charcoal by applying direct current via a pair of
carbon arc welding electrodes.

I have two Lister type 6hp diesel gensets and an engine dynamometer, as well
as the means to produce up to about 30A dc at up to140V for striking and
maintaining the plasma arc.

I got my second generator installed and running last night for the first
time. It's an old, but reliable1952 Lister Startomatic with a 2.5kVA
alternator.

I will shortly be building a brick built hearth area and flue extraction
system for siting the gasifier and exhaust gas heated thermal store - using
magnetite blocks which should be good for the expected 600C..

Progress has been a bit slow when you are trying to build a workshop,
laboratory and engine shed from scratch using mainly re-cycled components
before you can make a start building the gasifier.

When the infrastructure is in place, then we can put some of these ideas to
test.

I found an interesting site describing Lowe's 1873 carburetted water gas
technique where oil is sprayed into the hot gas output to increase its
calorific value. There is lot of waste vegetable oil and fats available
which are unsuitable for the biodiesel industry but could be utilised in
this manner. Carbon arc rods in vegetable oil or hydrogenated fats is a
fast way of increasing its temperature and creating a vapour.
