Star valves also bypass gas through the empty half of the rotating star. They
do not like larger particles as they jam between the blade and the outer
housing. Most of the star valves I have used have had cast iron blades against a
machined cast iron housing which has made it difficult to feed anything other
than fine material into the reactor and this is not good for downdraft systems
as they tend to occlude when fine materials are used. Not using slide gates or
star valves has allowed multiple fuels of various densities, dimensions,
compressibilities, to be successfully used into a pressurized system with low
maintenance, high reliability and under reasonably elevated pressures.
