The cost per kWe for industrial gensets in the multi hundred kW range is
closer to $500-600/kWe installed for spark ignition models and some
suppliers are over $1000/kWe!  Interestingly the most expensive are also
the most picky with one major company telling us recently that their
engines can't accept producer gas with 345 ppm acetylene as it might
cause a backfire!

For small casual systems then a 5kW Honda or equivalent is a lot
cheaper.  We have also looked at some better quality clones of 50kW
Nissan engines for budget farm applications, but essentially you get
what you pay for.
