Pressure on the price of foods 20.04.2008 The meeting in the headquarters of International Monetary Fund, in New York, was to analyze the crisis of the credit; only that the attention of the World Bank and ministers of 185 countries finished if coming back toward the feeding. In the headquarters of the Organization of United Nations, the secretary-generality Ban Ki Moon affirmed that the increase of 83% in the prices of foods must take 100 million people in return to the line of the poverty in some countries. The increase of the demand for foods and the option for using them to produce fuel had been also treated in Brasilia, in 30ª conference of the FAO, the world-wide organization for feeding and agriculture. Not-governmental representatives of 33 countries and organizations had admitted that the subject is delicate and controversial. President Lula defended the biocombustíveis. “He is with increasing astonishment that I see attempts to create a cause relation and effect
enters the development of the biocombustíveis and the food scarcity or the increase of the prices”, the president make a speeched. This is not the opinion of more than 30 entities gifts in the conference. Laura Hurtado, sociologist of Guatemala, is integrant of the international ONG Action Aid. “We are conscientious of that the biocombustível is a threat to the feeding and the alimentary security”, it says. The conference produced one informs technician, a document species with recommendations. The FAO recognizes that each country has a reality and a different bioenergética capacity, but that the right to the feeding must be priority. The entity also affirms that more studies are necessary to use to advantage the chances better and to diminish the risks that the biocombustíveis can bring. In São Paulo, the reporter Camila Marconato talked with the economist Fernando Homem de Melo of USP, to know until bioenergia point and foods can walk together. In 2006, we saw the world
to run for the biocombustíveis. Now, people see this same international community congregated to argue the collateral effect of this. How it is this equation? Fernando Homem de Melo: It seems a certain repentance, because the problem that we are testifying today comes of is for inside. He was initiated in the United States in 2005, with the law of energy of the government Bush; passed year, for example, on the basis of this law, the plants of etanol of maize had consumed 81 million tons of maize. In the Europe, in this year of 2008, it is said more than in 100 million tons of grains. This shakes the international market of grains. The use of grains for biocombustível has pressured more the prices, until more than what the demand, that has grown in recent years? Fernando Homem de Melo: Without a doubt, the increase of the biocombustíveis weighs well more. Looking at the prices of soy, maize, same wheat and of the cotton - that she is not eatable -, up to 2005, they were
absolutely calm. The ton of maize was in US$ 82, and today it is in more than US$ 200. Exactly with the growth of the demand of poor of the world - India, China -, the market gave account up to 2005. The market is not giving account of the great demand of biocombustíveis. Because of the great demand, the world-wide supplies of maize had fallen about 17,5% in last the two years; e of soy, 7.5%.
