It needs qualifying and that's because often we're talking about using
the gas to fuel an ic engine, which needs a cold gas, yet we know
typically the gas leaving the gasifier needs to be ~850C in order for
it to have reacted out well. So the cold gas efficiency of the
gasifier will involve "losing" up to 20% of the heat released in the
gasifier.

In a head to head between straight combustion of coal and cold
producer gas, from similar coal, for the same heat output overall more
coal will be burned in the gasifier. As the final product gases will
be the same CO2 and some water he can make that claim but it is a tad
ingenuous the way he tells it.
