Lewis; sugar cane industry have worst enemy "capital". Believe it or not sugar cane plantations use hand power intensively. To supress it was builded croppers over bulldozers. It seems very beautiful also enormous lorries weighing an hundred metric tons loaded and 100 feet long. All this "parafernalia" is not free. Also boilers, turbines, mills generators is an violent money investment.
In november 2007 we meet in São Paulo at "O Estado de São Paulo" newspaper with Cicero Junqueira Franco owner of more than one billion dollar sugar cane mill. They meet with others to form an 35 million tons a year of sugar cane milling. Societys have costs. UNICA manager Eduardo Pereira de Carvalho was clear in his forecasts in meeting. We write an matter about it "Energia limpia ó un futuro incierto" en Ecoportal.net suggesting to use bagasse as cellulosic ethanol source. This matter was presented last year to IAPA Excelency Award 2007.
Cellulosic ethanol need to be efficient in split wood to cellulose recovering "black liquor". This problem is also present in paper mills. 
My opinion is if you use tractor to plant and to crop with oil probably you pay to work if use your products to burn. Oil is yet lesser cost than many others fuels. The reality in São Paulo neighbours only fuel to beat others is wood chips as waste from sawmill industry.The worst injury to environment is deforestation to plant annuals crops as NYT matter says.

Ethanol from cane should be attractive in many places, especially if one uses 
an "energy cane" management system, instead of a "sugarcane" one.

The former optimizes tons of millable stalk per acre. The latter optimizes 
sucrose as a pecent of millable stalk by weight.
