[Gasification] Cellulosic ethanol

That’s one idea Harmon.
Converting X million semi-urban acres into cattail producing environments
might be a little disruptive to the current and planned local land uses. I
could be wrong but I bet it will be easier to grow and harvest 5 million
acres of switchgrass or some type of herb biomass than procure land, permit
and construct a million acres of cattail ponds...though I like cattail
ponds.
Perhaps we have enough studies...lets build and operate (long term) some
demonstration units...a lot of them...demonstrating a vast number of
promising sustainable energy growing and conversion pathways. We need to
get serious about the resources we put into PUBLIC research (Apollo scale
money and brains) and encourage very public discussion of a longer term
energy vision(10-50 years) to direct the research investments. As long as
the private sector continues to determine public policy (US bias here) and
self-deal all public research and commercialization efforts....we seem to
limit new businesses, new ideas and unconventional efforts...a flaw with
possible long term negative impacts.

And the estimates for cellulosic ethanol from cattails is 10,000
gallons per acre. If and when they ever get cellulosic ethanol out of
the lab and into production, that is.
