But how would you turn sander dust into char?

If you have a "self fired system", it might be difficult to get heat 
into the interior uniformly.

If you had a static retort system, it might be difficult to get heat 
into the interior uniformly.

Sander dust might be OK in a rotating retort of some sort, or in a 
fluidized bed of some sort.
