          from Lewis L Smith

I grew up in a new venture environment, my father's cousin invented the first
commercially successful plastic-extrusion machinery and I have worked
professionally with several inventors. So I always applaud people who have the
courage, persistence and inspiration to invent and commercialize a "better
mousetrap", particularly in the field of energy.

Indeed in the long run, it may well be the ubiquitous bacteria which save
humanity from itself. However, from hard experience, I also know that it is a
long, hard road from the first cry of "eureka" to a commercially feasible product
or process being "yanked off the shelves" by eager buyers.

In particular, it is a long, hard road from the lab to proof of concept to
the pilot plant to a commercial product or process and then to mass deployment,
as Doug Williams has so eloquently described on numerous occasions. And often
it is turns out that scale up is harder than concept invention.

So until we have some estimated dates on which products or processes will
become available for testing, purchase or whatever, it is very difficult [ for me
at least ] to introduce the hoped-for technological and commercial
breakthroughs into the energy sector's long-range planning.

In this regard, bioenergy resembles H2. The odds on some form of the H2
economy becoming a reality are at least 60%. But in what form and when depends on a
series of technological breakthroughs whose timing and chances of success
cannot yet be estimated.

So, as they used to say in the "golden days" of radio, "tune in next week" !

Cordially. ###
