George,
When you decide on a brand of solar panel, let us know. I am right in
line behind you. Don't know much about brands, efficiencies, life
expectancy and so on. I'm thinking about adding panels one by one as I
can pay cash for them, until I have a substantial system.
Goal 1 might be an uninterruptible power supply for computers, freezer,
and a couple of lighting circuits. Goal 2 would be to grow into a
grid-tie system probably.

Importance: Low
There was an article in the SF Chronicle last Friday about solar
innovation.
Applied Materials acquired a company that had the rights to German
Technology that in April 2005 produced a 9 sqft panel with a 10%
efficiency.
Miasole, a solar startup in Santa Clara is working on technology based
on hard drives.
Prism Solar Technology www.prismsolar.com is working on holographic
solar panel that will reduce the use of silicon and cost.
Hopefull some of this will bear fruit in the near furture.
But as soon as I can fork out some money I will do a system, even if its
with current technology and costs.
