Thanks to all for the responses.

The ground is fairly dry, at least according to the local vegetation.
We are building with a crawlspace that will be well-ventilated. It did
indeed occur to me to use a moisture meter as well as a dehumidifier,
thanks! Thanks also for the information about wet cellulose, I have
been very worried about that.

(Speaking of which---if anyone knows of a wet cellulose contractor in
northern California I'd be glad to hear about 'em!)

One thing we are very worried about is getting rained on before the
house is closed in. It occurred to us to get the basic structure up as
soon as possible and then tarp it in case of an errant rainstorm or even
heavy dew, which we get quite often. I'm mostly worried about rain on
plywood, as I don't think it will affect the lumber that much although I
could be mistaken about that. Time and the moisture meter will tell
all, I suppose.

> Will the exterior stucco have a drainage plane behind it?

No idea, but I'll talk to the contractor and educate myself on it!

thanks again
