I have a client that wants a new roof on her 1834 house.
We are going to tear off and replace the asphalt shingle roof.
The question is the underlayment.
We typically use Ice & Water Shield on the perimeter only.
Three feet in from the eaves and rake with felt paper in the field.
The client however, is requesting full coverage Ice & Water Shield.
We do not feel that this is a good idea, since it prevents the roof
sheathing from drying to the exterior.
We are concerned about trapping the attic moisture in he sheathing and
causing rot.
We are in a cold climate, 20 miles from the coast.
The house has maybe 8-10 inches of loose blown cellulose in the attic.
What is the current wisdom?
