(I hope I'm not just "fanning the flames"!)
D'oh! I "wood" hope we can eventually "smoke out" the answer to this
"burning" question. I'll "log" on and "stick" in my opinion. Maybe we
can decide on a "clearcut" answer, without beating around the bush.
I'm also of the opinion that density of pollution is a factor in how
undesireable it is - a cow patty in an open field doesn't qualify as
pollution, but the same stuff in the runoff of a concentrated feedlot
with 1000 cattle does qualify. One wood stove per 5 acres in the
country is a lot different impact than one per household in a dense
apartment building. Overall, in the long run, woodburning should be
carbon neutral, as long as you don't clear cut the whole country like
our grandfathers did.
Cutting wood also forces one to be aware natural cycles and systems -
seasoning wood, types of wood and trees, timber stand improvement, these
are all entry points into a broader conservation viewpoint that most
homeowners ignore when they just turn up the thermostat.
