I chose hardieboard as the best of a bad lot, rejecting wood siding as
being rot-prone and not too fire resistant, vinyl (egads), metal siding,
and some others.  While it does have a lot of embodied energy, it is
likely to last until someone decides to tear it off of there, probably
by using some sort of ray gun that will be developed in that far future
day.  

Natural lime plasters and stuccoes (not EIFS, that stuff that rots
walls) were the only other finish in the running, and I could not find a
contractor willing to try them.  

Longevity rates high in my book as a green characteristic.
