[Greenbuilding] on demand hot water heaters

Yes these are widely available but not very popular. Most houses
here have 220v (and these small heaters are almost always electric)
but they can also be wired for 110v.

If you're building new it's not that much more trouble to run two
lines (hot and cold) rather than one and these little heaters cost
$200 to 500 (quick price check at Lowes.com - no particular
recommendation of them)

there are several other models there and on the web in general you'll
find many choices.

The typical construction here in the US would be to have one central
heater because the cheap ones cost only slightly over $200 so why
spend $200 per sink/shower? (NOT my thinking --- I've got solar hot
water, put in with my own two hands).

The other advantage these have is the instant hot - no need to run
the water for a long time to get it to me hot.
