Hi, Geri. The price you have been quoted is way too high. My suggestion
is for you to place ads in the papers asking for a cabinet builder or
furniture maker who would be interested in building your cabs for you.
There are a lot of people quietly running woodworking shops out of their
garages or other small spaces that never come up on the radar screen.
The often don't advertise, but instead gain work by word of mouth. I
know people who have done this for decades.
If one craftsman with a shop in his or her garage can't supply the
volume you need (say to supply a 50-unit townhouse) then a network of
them could do the work on a co-op basis, making parts of the cabs like
Swiss watchmakers making gears and stuff at home.
If you're in a fair sized municipality--which you probably are if you
own they specialized type of store you do--there is probably someone who
would love to supply your needs.
I know I would if I were closer to you.
Cheers,
Chris Green.
