[Greenbuilding] Green counters?

We've used soapstone--it's somewhat porous and soft compared to granite, but
quite beautiful and serviceable for counters.  However, I had heard the VA
soapstone quarries were played out, and that the material is imported now.

soapstone is so soft I would not recommend it for a  countertop. 
It's used commonly for  carving sculptures. I even broke a granite counter 
putting a phone handset  down once.


note that the grade of soapstone that is used for sculpture is VERY  
different from the grade that is used for counters !!
