The Dept of Energy (DOE) conducts surveys to track energy consumption
every four years. Last survey was 2003. Previously you had to purchase a
bound report of this data. Now it is available on-line.

The data is thorough. It documents buildings surveyed on size, use,
location, energy fuels used, consumption, etc. We have used this data
before as a base line to see if an existing building is operating
efficiently or not. If a building compared to the same size building,
usage and region of the country is consuming less energy than the
national average, then obviously the potential for savings is lower and
may not be enough to proceed with any further analysis.

Anyway, if you weren't already aware of this resource, then you can find
it at:

www.eia.doe.gov <http://www.eia.doe.gov/>

>From there you can select "Households, Buildings & Industry".

>From this page we have generally found the "Program Information &
Reports" useful. Particularly the Commercial Buildings Energy
Consumption Survey (CBECS).
