One way to think about is: what is the recommend amount of insulation
regardless of construction style. For me, the government recommends (
http://www.ornl.gov/sci/roofs%2Bwalls/insulation/ins_16.html ) at least
R-49 for the attic. This is what would be best everywhere if
construction constraints didn't effect the calculation. Note: that I
personally think the government is likely underestimating the inflation
rate for fuels, so that would indicate that even more would be
economical.
