One way to think about is: what is the recommend amount of insulation 
regardless of construction style.  For me, the government recommends ( 
http://www.ornl.gov/sci/roofs%2Bwalls/insulation/ins_16.html ) at least 
R-49 for the attic.  This is what would be best everywhere if 
construction constraints didn't effect the calculation.  Note: that I 
personally think the government is likely underestimating the inflation 
rate for fuels, so that would indicate that even more would be 
economical.
