Thanks everyone for good suggestions. I confess to never having considered
just leaving the exterior siding and asbestos tiles in place. I am
definitely considering it now. However doing so raises a new question and a
concern:

Though I understand the benefits of minimizing thermal bridging when
pursuing wall-thickening, I'm uncertain how I would tie my exterior
wall/Larsen truss to the house if I leave the asbestos in place. I have the
rafter ends and window jambs, but that isn't much. I suppose since I'm going
to be adding a foundation anyway I could construct a super wide bottom plate
or cantilever something out from the existing bottom plate, but I had still
assumed I'd have a few extra points to tie things together. But perhaps I
should be thankful I don't have that temptation?

Leaving the siding and asbestos in place, I would also have to find enough
new or used exterior siding for the whole house. Though it is fortunately a
small house, I was counting on being able to reuse most of the original
siding (clear 1x8s currently hidden beneath asbestos tiles). Though as I
will be increasing the perimeter/circumference of the house I'd obviously
need new (matching) boards at some of the outside corners anyway....
