I'm afraid that I've all of this thread and since the List archives are
still inaccessible I don't know any of the specifics of the building to be
retrofitted so apologies if this message seems completely out of touch.
One approach to the above problem was to use sheet metal clips (sort of
like joist hangers)attach short 2x3 stand-offs to an existing frame
dwelling (siding left in place) to carry 2x3 curtain wall studs and create
a superinsulation cavity to be filled with blown-in cellulose.
From what I recall of the description of the process, they blew in the
cellulose (this was in the days before wet-sprayed dense-pack) and then
beat the $#!+ out of the walls in order to pre-settle the cellulose after
which they removed the easily-demountable trim board at the soffit and
topped up the insulation.
