The biggest leaky duct problem is in the attic or unconditioned spaces.
If the leaks are inside the building envelope, then they are less of a
concern, because the air doesn't get wasted on heating all outdoors.

Sure, it's better to have the air go where it is designed to go, but the
overall energy savings from sealing ducts located totally inside will be
dwarfed by the savings achieved from tightening ducts in unconditioned
spaces.

Is there any way to solve the problem of leaky ducts without ripping
your walls out?

I know it's a big problem in my house, but haven't a clue it there's
anything I can afford to do about it.
