[Greenbuilding] Stucco overhead?

Hallo.
Trying to get a base layer of stucco up over the entryway before
it gets too cold. Tomorrow is pretty much my last opportunity, based
on the forecast. I have some surface-bond cement, and tried to use
that, but it doesn't like to adhere to the mesh, and comes away in
wet, cohesive sheets. I'm making headway, patch by patch, but it's
time consuming and clearly not made for it. I think that there are
too many fibers, and it's actually too sticky, sticking to itself in
preference to the expanded metal lath.
I wouldn't mind using straight-up traditional lime stucco, which
I can make whenever I want, but I suspect that it would not stick
well enough in an overhead.
Can anyone suggest something which will stick nicely to expanded
metal lath, and make a decent substrate for later brown and finish
coats?
