[Greenbuilding] linseed oil finish causing freckles?

We used linseed oil mixed with kerosene as a wood exterior finish on a
lakeside vacation home in North Louisiana. We elected to use this product
because it discourages insects. The kerosene cut the oil and allowed it to
spread easy with a brush and the oil went further. However the fumes from
this product are almost overwhelming even when used outside. It seemed to
work ok in protecting the home from the harsh weather conditions we
experience in that area of the country. The real downside is if the wood
ever caught fire it would absolutely burn like a giant candle. I doubt any
fire department hose could put it out.
