A Deconstruction + Rebuild Training in Mississippi for
the Recovery and Reuse of Materials for Rebuilding
After Katrina Using Local Resources
The Hamer Center for Community Design at Penn State
University, with support from the Oak Hill Fund, US
EPA Region IV, and Mississippi State University Gulf
Coast Community Design Studio, will be conducting a
hands-on deconstruction training workshop in Biloxi,
MS in January 3-14, 2007.
Please share with colleagues you think may be
interested.
The workshop will consist of expert leaders from
around the US, and volunteer participants from around
the US and from the Gulf Coast region. Four to five
homes that are unable to be rehabilitated will be
fully deconstructed and selective dismantling will be
conducted on portions of several homes to make them
feasible for rehabilitation. We will also have
demonstrations of processing and preparing the
materials for reuse in the most efficient ways and for
maximum utilization.
Many volunteer participants are also skilled and will
provide a peer group to guide novices and provide
opportunities for shared learning for experienced
persons as well.
The recovered materials will go to help the rebuilding
process in Mississippi - directly back to the
community and by university architecture students
developing potential value-added product designs and
processes that can application at large scale. The
uses realized by the community will in turn help
develop information about the materials and markets
for developing local Gulf Coast deconstruction and
reuse capacity.
There is no fee for the trainiing. Participants will
be responsible for their transportation to and from
Biloxi, MS.
Housing will be provided at the Project Teamwork
Salvation Army / HfH Volunteer Village in Biloxi, MS.
This is dorm-like accommodations with bunk beds and
communal kitchen at $20/night. We will provide group
transportation for those who choose to stay at this
location. For those staying elsewhere, they will
require separate transportation. There may be a small
fee to cover basic personal protective equipment and
disposables. Information regarding local hotels can be
provided upon request.
Financial assistance is potentially available based
upon request.
Please register for the training by replying ONLY to
guy_brad at yahoo.com email with your name and dates you
wish to participate. We expect to have two rotations,
Jan 3-7 and Jan 8-13, and depending upon numbers to
dismantle 2-3 homes in each rotation.
