Re the below, Hobo loggers are great. I have five and use them all the time. 
If you need only temperature, try the temp/external Hobo, and buy the remote temp sensor. Run the remote wire through a window or door and get outside temp that way, keep the Hobo inside, voila, indoor & outdoor temp with only one logger. 
I use the basic software to download, then import to Excel and graph it there (allows me to combine multiple Hobos on one graph). I normally run them at 10-minute-apart readings, they'll go 27 days (!) at that rate, and it makes pretty lines to follow for us visual people. Hourly might be fine for your purpose, but I'm usually looking for a room that gets too hot or too cold at a particular part of the day, and hourly readings would not be enough for me. 
Incidentally, I find the Temp/RH Hobos to be very useful, surprising how much info RH can give you. Many times an anomalous temperature swing has been shown to be an open window or door by wildly swinging RH, or significant air leakage in one area revealed by a high or low RH on only one sensor.
Of course everyone's right that measuring temperature won't give you total energy used before & after improvements, but if you want temperature recordings, Hobos are great.
