I'd agree, Mary. I would like to be working on more fronts toward
sustainability but there's only one of me. At one point, when I was
optimistic and 25, I was trying to work on too many fronts, and found it
exhausting. Now if I can just focus on buildings, and leave other
fields to other people, hoping that they make progress in their way and
I can reap some of the benefits. Meanwhile we drive around in
inefficient cars, consume things made out of plastic, and a host of
other contributions to the problem. Things won't change overnight, and
if they did we wouldn't like it much. When I replace the vehicles I
have now, the new vehicles will get about double the gas mileage, if
they run on gas at all. Since I don't garden anymore, the farmer's
market and the organic produce in the store get my business - let
someone who is actually good at gardening do that part. If I can sign on
to a renewable energy program at my utility, I'll do that. I'm
insulating some rental property, even though I don't pay the utility
bills, because it is the right thing to do. As time goes on, and each of
us pushes where we can, it becomes easier and easier.

Yes, and each of us must draw a line in the sand somewhere. Because we
live in an industrialized society that destroys the planet doesn't mean
we are forced to buy into it full throttle. It is always a matter of
degree--and you would have us buy in 100%, if we cannot reduce to 0%:
I'm so sick of that INANE ARGUMENT!*** WE STILL DO HAVE SOME CHOICES,
and when we have a choice, we should choose the right thing, and in the
meantime work toward more choices that afford us sustainability,
democracy, and justice.
