Something we have discussed but not tried yet is to use the following
product with rigid insulation.

Our dense-pack contractor thinks it will work if we use 2" rigid and
foam the edges for added strength.
We will staple the product parallel to the ceiling plane deep enough to
get the desired R-value. 

I'll let everyone know how it turns out.

The insulation contractor plans to install insulation screen, then blow
cellulose above that.  It won't be dense packed, so it will settle some,
but we should be able to pack 18" in there easily which will be plenty
after settling. 

We could have done the same thing with a 16" truss and a hot roof
design. Either way, I don't think it is hard to do.
