[Greenbuilding] PaperStone Counter Tops or Richlite Countertops ormaterials

Here is an environmental comparison of Richlite and Paperstone that I
received from Joel Klippert, the founder of both companies. He assured me
that the "other" composite is Richlite. Paperstone is prone to warping (not
sure about Richlite), so you need to mechanically fasten it. We have
friends that have installed both (color black), and both get a slight
weathered look (no longer jet black, more of a mottled black) after constant
water and cleaning. These are not polished granite, which they are not
trying to be. We are about to remodel our kitchen, and we are going to use
Paperstone.
"Environmental Impact Statistics
A 1" by 5' by 12' sheet of PaperStone Certified (versus a regular phenolic
composite manufactured from virgin fiber and a regular, commercially
available, solvent-based resin) saves:
· 1233 gallons of water
· 2.03 million BTU's of energy
· 131 pounds of solid waste
· 254 pounds of greenhouse gases
· 55 pounds of petroleum-based phenol
· 22 pounds of natural gas-based methanol
Regular PaperStone, with a 50% post-consumer recycled content product
(versus 100% for PaperStone Certified), saves a similar amount of phenol and
methanol but only 50% of the water, energy, solid waste and greenhouse gases
listed above.
In either case, purchases of PaperStone products, versus the competitive
products, have a surprisingly large impact on our environment."
