I would look into ICFs.
You can install and fill them yourself with an additional friend or two.
I used the  Standard ICF system for a garage/mudroom addition last year.
The supplier came over to help me get started and assisted with the pour
for an hourly fee. (Money well spent!)
Other than that, I set the blocks and rebar with my children as helpers.

You still use poured concrete so the building department is happy.
If you plan on finishing the basement, you have insulation and a smooth
surface already in place.
