[Greenbuilding] seeking greenest homes

Thanks to everyone who responded to my query on greenest homes, on and 
off the listserv. I have quite a lot to pick through.

What strikes me is the wide range of energy efficiency, and priorities, 
that exists within green building. It's becoming clear that I'll need to 
convert energy use to a standardized unit for comparison. On the other 
hand it seems like it would be a nightmare to try to quantify embodied 
energy for each house.

I've already been sent a few good leads on this, but I'm also interested 
in finding the best possible examples of a retrofit, if anyone has 
anything to add.

ps In response to the question of driving, of course I very likely 
shouldn't be driving, even on straight used fryer oil (I put in a 
Greasecar kit last year). It's hard to imagine ever achieving a 
sustainable civilization, isn't it?
