A $20 electric heater with a thermostat would have fewer fumes.
Electric mattress pads seem more efficient than waterbeds, with
less thermal mass. Or throw open the windows and crawl under
quilts on freezing nights, like the Swiss.

So could $69 window ACs, especially in low-mass houses. 
Cheaper to run than central air, even with lower SEERs. And 
if one breaks, the others keep working, without expensive repairs.
