This gets me thinking about my own building. I have a metal roof, and
after watching widowmaker chunks of ice sliding off, banging up against
my AC compressor and smashing my plants last winter, I've ordered a snow
guard to be put in on the edges. Am I inviting ice damming, and
subsequent roof problems by doing this?

Depending on the length of the roof, you will probably need to install snow
guards at a couple of places along the roof. Some snow guard sellers have
design tools on their websites that help to calculate the intervals. Also
has to do with the roof pitch and the amount of snow on the roof.
