[Greenbuilding] Current thoughts on Batteries in grid connected PV systems?

I would ignore all the minutia of battery tech, and ask why you would 
want batteries, on a grid tied educational building?  If the power goes 
out, won't people be sent home?  The rest of the time they are 
redundant, a hazard, a maintenance headache, etc.

Unless, of course, battery tech is part of the curriculum.
