Here are two good links, the first being focused on Texas!

Subject: [BULK] [Greenbuilding] Sand termite barrier

The talk about termites and perimeter insulation reminded me of
something I read about a while back. There was some research
that showed that sand of a particular grain size can be used as
a termite barrier. The grains are two big for the bugs to move,
but the spaces between are too small for them to crawl through.

I will be building a slab-on-grade house at some point. Is this
actually being used at all in new construction in the US (Texas,
specifically)? If it works, it sounds like a nice solution.

Thanks,
    - Ian.
