I am about to tackle a South-facing gable on which I have hitherto not
managed to keep rainwater out when the wind blows hard. It is a wood sided
facade with wood trim around two outward opening casement windows. I have
caulked and caulked, but to no avail. I suspect the windows. I expect to
take all the siding and trim off and see what can be done to better manage
water intrusion around the windows. My guess from past discussions of this
subject on this list is that Joe Lstiburek's books and papers are a good
place to start. My question is whether there are basic diagrams (or
descriptions) in his books or anywhere else (his books on moisture
management are pretty spendy) that show how one might construct flashing for
the purposes of redirecting any water making it past or around paint, caulk,
siding, and trim?

You can find some good installation diagrams on Dupont's web site. Search
for Dupont FlexWrap, then look into the PDFs for the technical details.
Our crew backs up this installation with a bead of caulking on the inside of
the window to the FlexWrap as it comes out below the base of the window. We
figure that any water leaking internally through the window will then be
forced to exit the opening to the outside.
