Lawrence, Ted, Laren, Rob, Ronald, Tom and others on the list,

I appreciate the replies. This is good stuff.

To answer Lawrence, yeup, new to this list, but long time advocate of
building 'green'. Started working in architecture after getting my
physics degree and teaching??? Made some sense at the time. Now, after
going to school finally in architecture, I am working professionally in
Ann Arbor, MI.

To the window topic:
The hardest part in this research is getting the U-values that compare
apples to apples. I see U-value ranges for good windows btwn .28 and
.33. I can't decide on going with wood (my historic side wants to match
what I have or my energy side wants a long-lasting performing window) or
with fiberglass. There is a pretty cool historic painting scheme we are
going with, so factory applied paint vs in the field, I know I'll get
better long term results with factory applied but it'll cost a bunch
with the custom colors (wood or fiberglass).

Loewen, ThermotechFiberglass, Inline Fiberglass Ltd, Kolbe.... I can't
decide! Plus, it's not as easy as expected to just compare apples to
apples.

Oh, and Rob, my crappy old windows.. I have refurbished, weatherstripped
and repainted, then added AlliedWindow storms to them. Beautiful. I
don't know how they perform, but I imagine air infiltration still isn't
perfect.

As to orientiation, because that seems vital in selecting the right kind
of window: one will be west facing and the other north. So Laren, I
suppose the screen placement may still be a consideration for the west
one? And Lawrence, I agree, the fixed or hinged windows seem like a
good performance option. I'll have to look into more hinged window
options. I saw that Loewen has a double (stacked) access window option.
