I've never thought the slab under a wood stove got very warm. Mine is
comfortable to step on barefoot after the stove has run a while, but
I've got my woodstove sitting right on top of the stained concrete
floor. No issues through one winter at least. If you ever have a
problem, you could build a pedestal later, but I doubt it will ever be
an issue.

Sorry, that was misleading.
I meant radiant heat created directly underneath the wood stove pedestal
& out across the slab (12"-18").
We did not install radiant floor heat. The wood stove will be our main
source of heat.
Oh, & yes, we did insulate underneath & around the slab, right up to
the top edge! <smile> Actually, it is code here.
