[Greenbuilding] Alternative Trim Stock

I'm looking for thoughts on alternatives to traditional (here in Maine
it's white pine) wood trim stock.  There are a number of products now on
the market (including concrete composite and PVC-based).  Please post
some wisdom on a long lasting, durable and recyclable material for trim
stock that will be applied in a widely variable, often damp, climate.
Low embedded energy is a plus as is expected maintenance.
