     At the risk of sounding like a grinch, no.

     As far as I can tell, after years of asking people to trim their  
posts, the only way to obtain compliance is to have a list rule  
against overquoting and a list administrator willing to boot people  
when they don't follow it.

     Asking people not to overquote is like asking teenagers please  
not to throw their beer cans on the side of the road.  Pointing out  
that some list members pay by the bite, or are on low-speed  
connections?  You might as well spit into a wind tunnel.
