The forests   always had earthworms, but not species that eat raw organic 
matter.   Red wrigglers are efficient at composting because compostable material 
is raw organic matter.   If you let the material compost, then the residue 
would appeal to other species of earthworms.   We tend to think that 'worms are 
worms' but that is like saying mammals are mammals.   There are several distinct
ions between a ferret and a whale.   It is so, also, with species of 
earthworms.
