[Greenbuilding] Catalytic media water softener

I just found out about
these<http://www.pelicanwatertechnologies.com/index.php> salt
free <http://www.no-salt.com/tech.htm> water softeners and am wondering if
anyone is using or has used one.  From what I understand, they do not flush
highly salty waste water down the drain, nor does the drinking water contain
sodium.  I'm not seeing any downside to these things, which makes me
suspicious.  Do they work?  I am looking for a system to use on city water
so the hardness will not be that of well water.
