<There is another benefit that even a leaky curtain will bestow - with a
bare window, you are radiating heat from you body to all outdoors, with a
curtain you are radiating to a warmer object. At the same temperature, a
room with window treatments will feel warmer.>
Was it among these messages that I saw a factoid stating (something to the
effect of) "you will be as comfortable in a room with an air temperature of
90 and a wall temperature of 40 as you would with a wall temperature of 90
and an air temperature of 40?" (stated in degrees fahrenheit)
Whether the numbers are accurate, the principle readily apparent; the living
room of my mid censh hi rise condo apt is 18' wide, with about 95 sf of
single glazed, aluminum patio doors. During the winter, the room is
uncomfortable at any reasonable air temp--until the heavy (non-air sealing)
drapes are drawn.
I'll add another completely anecdotal, unscientific, unquantifiable
assertion--that this phenomenon has increasing impact on me as my baldspot
spreads, in a similar pattern and rate as the melting of the arctic ice cap.
