[Greenbuilding] Masonry sidewall insulation

Among the mid censh masonry houses I've worked on, I've occasionally noted a
coating of pitch on the inside face of the masonry--I assume this may have
been an "upgrade" in its day.
I don't have any idea how this might be associated with terr'ists applying
wipings of mass discoloration on the mortar--just to suggest that whether or
not there's a vapor barrier in the mix might be a clue...

As for where the mortar was allegedly getting eaten by "a greenish
acid" ( I don't know terrorists got into this thread), the tech I
spoke to said he saw this on the exterior mortar. Haven't seen this
myself, and I'm trying to find other people who have considerable
experience with cellulose insulation against brick to compare notes.
