[Greenbuilding] Window aspect ratio question.

Greetings all,

I was thinking today, as I looked a all the various window shapes on 
houses I passed by, that the aspect ratio of windows. is something I 
don't know anything about.  From the differences, I might assume that 
other don't either, or perhaps that they don't care.

Anyway, does anyone on this list, have information about which aspect 
ratios (i.e. what shape window for a given glass area) is the best for 
a given climate.  Are tall thin windows  better in cold climates or 
short fat ones?  Lacking this, I will be forced to try to figure it out 
from first principles.
