Hi Mary,

A book I was given for Christmas was about urban myths and a chapter
was devoted to the one about microwaves tearing molecules apart and
making carcinogens. (I can't give you a reference as I've lent it to
another family member) .

There is a good description of microwave ovens in Wikipedia.

Even if microwaves do damage molecules the effect is insignificant
compared with conventional grilling and roasting (especially
meat). If you are paranoid about cancer don't ever eat a barbequed sausage.

In my opinion a microwave oven is not a complete cooking
solution, it's just a handy gadget when you want to heat something
quickly. In the twenty or so years we have had a microwave oven in
our kitchen attempts to do serious meal preparation in just the
microwave have varied from passable to downright failures. People
tell me pastry can be cooked/re-heated in a microwave oven. It
always comes out soggy here.
