I looked into this issue a few months back.  Water softeners, as you
know, flush a brine solution down the drain when the go through a
recharge cycle.  I did some research and called some sewer experts at
the Extension office and elsewhere, and they assured me that the amount
of briny water, compared to the volume of wastewater in an average
house, would have no effect on a sewer lagoon as I have installed.  Its
definitely a valid concern, but I believe it is unfounded.  

I don't drink softened water, but I do have it installed on the hot
water side to keep my expensive tankless water heater from clogging up
with gunk.  What comes out of the shower ends up being a mix of about
30% soft and 60% hard water.
