Steve,

Unless you are in the business of renovating houses to sell or a real 
estate professional who really knows their area thinking about 
whether or not to do something to your house based on adding to the 
resale value is a waste of brainpower.

For the first few years (15-20?) a new house will add value to a plot 
of land.  After that it's debatable and after 40 to 50 years the cost 
of demolition needs to be subtracted from the land value.

Of course there are exceptions but fashion almost always trumps common sense.
