[Greenbuilding] Phonic insulation

Effective sound insulation is dependent on the sound you're trying to
stop, and the nature of your building. Double sheetrock can help kill
low-frequency sound, especially with a decoupling layer between them,
like that provided by greengluecompany.com or various other products. A
fairly light material inside the walls works well on higher frequency
sounds: fiberglass is often mentioned, but (since I hate it) I'd go with
rockwool or blown cellulose or cotton batts or... curiously, though, you
want a fairly light material for this, not too dense. Decoupling the two
sides of the wall, by using double-stud walls or (much harder to do
right) resilient channels, is crucial for the best jobs. Sealing all
holes and cracks is crucial. And recognizing that much of the sound will
be going around the wall instead of through it ("flanking" the wall) by
using neighboring structures or voids to get through, means that you
have to take a broader view than at first might appear. Finally, if
you're having trouble with footfalls and impact noise (the basketball
court upstairs), ideally you want a resilient subfloor or carpeting and
a pad.
Good luck! There's mountains of information on the web. Check out
greengluecompany.com, but there's lots more out there I'm just out of
time ;-)
